What Are the Advantages of Personal Leadership and Mentoring?

Of late, personal coaching has pervaded all kinds of fields and professions, helping people to do better at their work and in their personal lives. Handling the professional aspects of life becomes much easier with the help of a personal coach, and people in business, even at an executive level, seek this help in their careers more and more every day. On the personal front too, this kind of coaching is really useful, and can help improve relationships.

During the process of personal coaching, the coach undertakes to maintain a relationship with the person he is helping. Before embarking a programme of personal coaching, the coach studies his customer's goals in depth, since an understanding of these goals is essential for the process of personal coaching. Personal coaches use all kinds of specialised methods and techniques to help their customers achieve their set goals. A major task of the personal coach is to bring the customer into a frame of mind for learning and improving.

How does the personal coach go about helping a customer? First, the coach will carefully study the various aspects of the customer's life, both personal and on the work front. He will ask a series of questions designed to elicit the maximum information, since this will help him help his customer to achieve his objectives. These questions will include queries about the customer's interpersonal relationships and interactions with important people in his life. The coach will also discuss these subjects with his client, getting more inputs, and they will jointly consider how best to attain the goals that the client has set for himself, either with or without the help of the coach. Together, they will create plans and timelines for the successful achievement of these goals, whether they come into the personal or professional life of the customer.

The coach will guide, assist, motivate and encourage his client, but in the final analysis, it is the learner who has to actually make it happen. While the coach supervises his customer's efforts, the customer has to put in that effort and follow the plans and guidelines that he and his coach have decided on together. He must stick to the methods that have been agreed upon to help him reach his personal or professional objectives, seeking counsel form his coach whenever necessary. As goals are achieved, the formulation of new objectives and plans to attain them are also undertaken by the coach and his client. At times, the plan may need to be changed to fit changed circumstances, and the coach will help here, too. His role is that of friend, philosopher and guide, but his customer will have to do the actual work himself!#
